Orthodontic emergencies & how to handle them

If you experience any orthodontic issues, don’t worry—most problems can be managed at home until your next visit. From loose brackets to discomfort after adjustments, we’ve outlined easy solutions to help you stay comfortable. And remember, if you need assistance, we’re just a call away!

Ortho Emergencies

Loose Bracket

If a bracket becomes loose but remains attached to the wire, cover it with orthodontic wax to minimize irritation. If it falls off completely, keep it safe and bring it to your next appointment. Be sure to avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods. Please call our office during business hours to schedule a repair.

Pokey Wire

If a wire is poking your cheek or gums, try to gently push it back using a cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil. You can also apply orthodontic wax to reduce discomfort. If the wire is too painful or cannot be moved, you may carefully clip it with sanitized nail clippers. Contact our office during business hours so we can make the necessary adjustments.

Canker Sores

Canker sores can show up from time to time in orthodontic treatment. While there’s no instant fix, you can make them feel better by placing orthodontic wax over the spot on your braces that’s causing irritation. We recommend CLO-SYS mouthwash to help with the discomfort.

Soreness or Discomfort

It’s normal to experience soreness after braces are placed or adjusted. Stick to soft foods, use over-the-counter pain relief as needed, and rinse with warm salt water to soothe your mouth. Discomfort typically improves within a few days.

Loose Spacer or Band

If a spacer or band comes loose, call us during business hours to schedule a replacement. If a band comes off, avoid chewing on that side until it can be repaired to prevent additional damage.

Lost or Broken Retainer

If your retainer is lost or broken, do not attempt to wear it. Place it in its case, and contact us right away to arrange for a replacement. Acting quickly helps prevent your teeth from shifting.

Swallowed Appliance or Piece of Braces

If a piece of your braces or appliance is accidentally swallowed, stay calm—small pieces usually pass without issue. However, if you have trouble breathing or experience choking, seek immediate medical attention.

Trauma

In the event of trauma to the mouth—whether from sports or an accident—please seek emergency care first. Once you’ve received the necessary treatment, contact our office for any orthodontic concerns.
